Strategic location with well-developed infrastructure

Ortviken's industrial site is equipped with a well-developed infrastructure, such as water purification, steam supply, electricity and compressed air. The site also has a strategic location, as SCA can offer logistics solutions worldwide. Here is the Ortviken pulp mill, our facility for chemi- thermomechanical pulp. Ortviken supplies district heating to Sundsvall´s municipality corresponding to the heating of 10,000 households.

History

  • The industrial activity at Ortviken began as early as the middle of the 19th century. Trees were built for square logs, which were used as mine supports, among other things.
  • In 1862, a sawmill was built on the site. During the 20th century, Ortviken developed into a modern industry and in 1958, two paper machines were put into operation. They were then followed by two additional paper machines which were put into operation in 1967 and 1986. During the 1990s, two of the paper machines for the production of lightly coated paper, LWC, were converted.
  • In 2020, SCA decided to shut down the newsprint production. At the same time, the decision was made to invest 1.45 billion SEK in increased production of chemi- thermomechanical pulp, CTMP.
  • The new CTMP facility at Ortviken's pulp mill was inaugurated on May 15, 2023, after which the old facility at Östrand's pulp mill was shut down. Production capacity increased from 90,000 tons to 300,000 tons.
